Garden hosts pollinator-friendly workshop

A group of local residents spent a fun and fact-filled time in May, learning how to create the ideal hanging basket for feeding and attracting pollinators – those vital insects who keep the natural world and our food sources thriving.

Surrounded by blossoming fruit trees and wildflowers in the Rickmansworth Community Orchard and Garden, Eco Ted showed participants the best way to plant out a hanging basket that will flower throughout even a dry summer.

Outdoor educator Ted is a mine of information about plants and animals. He threw in practical tips on what combination of compost and soil to use, how to know which plant food to add and sustainable ways to source biochar, a game changer for retaining water in soil (hint, this involves nappies!)

Participants all took home a basket they had made, brimming with pollinator-friendly plants. And they’re still blooming beautifully, nearly two months later, we’re reliably informed…
