Eco Club Flourishes at St John’s Catholic Primary School

Every Thursday lunchtime, St John’s Catholic Primary School comes alive with the enthusiasm of around 20 young Eco Club members, ranging from Year 1 to Year 6.

United by curiosity and a love for nature, the children embrace every opportunity to get their hands dirty, whether they’re hunting for bugs or planting daffodil and tulip bulbs. With fingers crossed, everyone hopes to see the flowers brighten up the school grounds in spring… provided the squirrels don’t get to them first!

Creative Activities For Kids

The club's been brilliant for sparking creativity too. Back in September, the children absolutely loved making lavender bags, so we did another session in November. By then we'd run out of homegrown lavender, but they were quite happy experimenting with essential oils and bicarbonate of soda instead - a clever idea we borrowed from eco-enthusiast Nancy Birtwhistle.

All materials used in the club are either sourced from home or WRAP, showing just how much fun can be found in resourcefulness and imagination.

Some of the children’s handiwork can be admired at the St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival. This is a lovely opportunity to show off their hard work, creativity and share their growing love for the environment, alongside other local community groups.

Duke of Edinburgh Volunteering

We are also delighted to welcome a new volunteer: Elise Mosely, who is joining us as she works toward her Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Bronze) certificate. Elise, joined by her mum Anne, has already contributed significantly to our community: they helped decorate the tree at St Mary's Christmas Tree Festival, took part in the November Market, and even helped in the garden on a rainy Sunday morning, showing real commitment and spirit.

Elise has also compiled a thoughtful list of hints and tips for how we can all make a difference this Christmas — a wonderful resource that we hope will inspire everyone to act more sustainably this festive season. Check out our latest newsletter to see it.
