Stronger Together: Connecting Hertfordshire’s Sustainable Communities
What happens when you bring together the longevity and energy of the Sustainable Three Rivers group and the practical experience of the ‘Sustainable Streets’ programme? You get a powerhouse of local knowledge ready to tackle the climate challenge house by house, and street by street.
Our recent community meeting, bringing these groups together, was a testament to the power of shared ideas. By bridging the gap between different environmental programmes across Hertfordshire, we are looking to create more resilient and connected action. Whether it is a "Zero Waste" success story or a technical breakthrough in home heating, these conversations are the engine room of our local transition.
Scaling Up Through Collaboration
By connecting the different Sustainable Streets groups across the county with Sustainable Three Rivers, we are sharing the "tips and tricks" that you won't find in a manual! Tried and tested climate beating solutions were shared.
Actions like plastic-free shopping, planting for pollinators, blister pack recycling success via our libraries - all vital for reducing our impact on the planet and encouraging to hear and share. By sharing what works and what doesn’t we can accelerate the positive impact of each of our actions. The real magic happens when we scale up.
The Retrofit Revolution: A Masterclass by Judith Leary-Joyce
The highlight of the session was an inspiring presentation, delivered with humour and candour, by local author and sustainability advocate Judith Leary-Joyce. Having recently completed a high-performance retrofit of her 1901 Victorian terrace, Judith shared the "legacy work" she is doing to make home efficiency accessible to everyone.
Judith’s journey proves that even our oldest, "leakiest" homes can be transformed into warm, low-carbon sanctuaries. Key takeaways from her talk included:
The Thermal Envelope: Thinking of your home like a hiker - insulation is the "warm jumper," but the airtightness membrane is the "windproof jacket" that makes it all work.
The Power of Natural Materials: Why wood fibre, hemp, and clay plaster are often better for both the planet and the health of our buildings than synthetic alternatives.
Controlled Ventilation: The vital importance of Heat Recovery systems to ensure fresh air and zero mould once a home is made airtight.
Heat Pump Mastery: Moving away from the "gas boiler mindset" to a "low and slow" heating method that keeps bills low and comfort high.
What’s Next?
From discussing the future of Green Finance for home improvements to the creation of Wildlife Corridors that link our gardens to local farmland, the scope of our ambition is growing. But step by step…
The most significant takeaway from our meeting was simple: Connection is key. When we share our successes and our setbacks, we make the path easier for the next person.
